Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 2026

School Compass is built by parents, for parents. We take the privacy of your family's information seriously — particularly information about your children. This policy explains clearly what we collect, why we collect it, how it is used, and what rights you have.

1. Who we are

School Compass (schoolcompass.com.au) is an Australian school advisory platform operated by School Compass (ACN [TO BE INSERTED]). We help Australian families make more informed decisions about school selection through personalised assessment reports.

For privacy enquiries, contact us at hello@schoolcompass.com.au.

2. What we collect

We collect information you provide directly:

  • Account details: your name, email address, and password.
  • Child details: your child's first name, date of birth, gender, current school, and year level.
  • Home address: used solely to calculate commute times to candidate schools. It is never shared, sold, or used for any other purpose.
  • Questionnaire responses: your answers to our learning and wellbeing profile questionnaire, which informs your child's profile and School Fit Report.
  • Uploaded documents: NAPLAN results, school report cards, and specialist reports you choose to share. These are used only to generate your child's profile and are never used for any other purpose.
  • Payment details: processed securely by our payment provider. We do not store card numbers or financial credentials.

3. How we use your information

Your information is used to:

  • Create and maintain your account
  • Generate your child's Learning Profile and School Fit Report
  • Calculate commute times from your home to candidate schools
  • Process your payment and manage your subscription if applicable
  • Communicate with you about your account and reports
  • Improve the quality and accuracy of our service

We do not use your data for advertising. We do not sell your data. We do not use your child's information to train AI models.

4. Legal basis for processing

We process your personal information on the basis of your consent (when you create an account and complete a profile) and to fulfil our contract with you (when you purchase a report). We process only the minimum information necessary to deliver our service.

5. Data security and retention

We use industry-standard encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access controls are in place to limit who can access personal data.

We are working toward storing all data within Australian data centres. Some components of our infrastructure may currently process data in other jurisdictions. We are actively reviewing and improving our data residency position and will update this policy when onshore hosting is confirmed across all services.

Sensitive documents (psychologist reports, OT reports, and speech pathology assessments) are automatically deleted 30 days after your School Fit Report is generated, unless you request earlier deletion.

6. Third-party service providers

We use trusted third-party service providers to operate the platform. These include providers for:

  • Secure database storage and user authentication
  • Web hosting and application delivery
  • Payment processing
  • Address and mapping services (for commute calculations only)
  • AI report generation

All providers are required to handle your data in accordance with their own privacy policies and applicable law. We do not authorise providers to use your personal data for their own purposes beyond delivering their service to us.

7. Children's information

School Compass is designed for use by parents and guardians on behalf of their children. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children.

Information about your child — including their name, age, learning profile, and any uploaded school documents — is treated with particular care. It is used only to generate their profile and report. It is not shared with schools, advertisers, or any third parties other than the service providers described in section 6.

You may request deletion of your child's information at any time by contacting us at hello@schoolcompass.com.au.

8. Your rights under the Australian Privacy Act

Under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Complain about how your information has been handled

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@schoolcompass.com.au. We will respond within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.

9. Notifiable data breaches

We comply with the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme under the Privacy Act. If a data breach occurs that is likely to result in serious harm to any individual, we will notify affected individuals and the OAIC as required by law.

10. Cookies and analytics

We use session cookies to maintain your login state. We may use basic analytics to understand how the platform is used, in aggregate and without identifying individuals. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or a notice on the platform. Continued use of School Compass after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
